Body Size and Shape

The soundboard (the guitar top), more so than any other part of the guitar determines the quality of the sound. Solid wood quarter-cut sitka spruce is an excellent choice for a steel-string acoustic. Engelmann spruce is also a good choice. For a softer sound you may choose a cedar top (more often found on classical guitars). Fir and mahogany can also be used for the soundboard.

Soundboard Wood

There are many possible choices of wood for the sides and back of your guitar. Mahogany, walnut, and cherry are good choices. For a more traditional look, go with Indian rosewood. And, to really get the attention of your audience, choose figured maple for the sides and back and watch the audiences’ jaws drop.

Sides and Back Wood

Inlayed pearl is one of the most beautiful ways to personalize your guitar. Whether the shimmering white of Mother-of-Pearl (MOP) or the more dramatic coloured Abalone pearl, nothing is more striking on a guitar than professional-quality inlay work.  Click here for more examples.
